If you’ve found a dog, cat or other animal that you think is stray the first thing to do is assess the situation 🤔 and your surroundings to make sure it is safe to collect the animal. 🚨 If the animal is injured 🤕 the best thing to do is take them to the RSPCA or call the RSPCA if you cannot move the animal safely. Legally, we cannot provide treatment beyond basic pain relief without an owners consent 🤒 and we want to ensure injured animals are receiving treatment when they need it most. 🙌
If you have safely collected the animal and it is not injured; check whether the animal 🐾 has a collar or tag. If there is a tag present - use this to contact the owner. 📞 If there is no collar or tag present then it’s best to scan for a microchip! Most veterinary practices will be happy to scan a stray for a chip and get in contact with their owner. 🐶🐱
As much as we’d love to; we cannot always take stray animals on board due to size constraints, amounts of surgical patients ✂️and our high hospital 🏥 patient caseload. If we cannot get in touch with an owner or the animal does not have a microchip the best place to take them is the RSPCA premises at Wacol or contact the Ipswich City Council. 👍
If you can hold onto the animal until an owner is found the best thing to do is start posting them on social media 📱 and register them found with the RSPCA. Usually, owners who are searching for their animal will check social media first for posts. You can also ring local veterinary clinics and leave details of the found animal with them. 🌟
